Medical, economic and organizational changes within the organization ?hospital? have brought about an increase in life expectancy and efficiency, but also a change in the way terminal diseases are being dealt with. What has remained is the demand that medical action always has to be in line with ethical principles. Hospital organizations have recently been trying to support decision-making in ethically difficult situations by setting up clinical ethics-committees in order to support the decision-making process and to systemize ethical learning. The present paper deals with the current situation of clinical ethics-committees in Austria, it shows what kind of moral and emotional impacts and problems there are from the perspective of those involved in the clinical routine and it tries to find answers on how learning on the institutional and personal levels could take place in order to meet ethical/moral demands. |
